Supplies

All Projects:

  • Fabric and Drawcord-  See desired backpack chapters for more information.

  • Fabric Shears

  • Matching Thread-  Your creation can only be as good as the materials you use and the thread is what holds it all together. I prefer upholstery thread as it's much more durable.  Beware of the bargain bins at fabric stores with thread selling for 50 cents a spool.  If you don’t know for sure whether your thread is strong enough, try breaking it with your hands. If you can break it, it’s cheap or too weak. If it lints up a lot, it’s also a cheap quality and will clog up your machine. You’re much better off paying a little more to get good quality.

  • Pattern Paper-  You can use regular white paper, construction paper,  wax paper, or professional pattern paper. Use anything that does not rip too easily and one that is easy to mark on and cut out.

  • Ruler with Inches, Yardstick, or Measuring Tape

  • Straight Pins

  • Water Soluble Marking Pen, Disappearing Ink Pen or Fabric Chalk-  Always check your fabric first to make sure it will come off.

  • Writing Utensil-  I suggest using a pencil while making your paper patterns in case a mistake is made.  Use a permanent marker or pen for labeling the patterns when complete.

Optional supplies:

  • Trims and embellishments for designing-  Studs, fabric flowers (see our Babydoll Guide), gems, beads, tassels, ribbon, appliqués, pins, chains, buttons, etc..

Preparing fabric

If your backpack is going to be made out of a washable fabric, and you plan on washing it after construction, you’ll need to wash it before cutting and sewing.  This helps to prevent shrinkage after sewing which may cause a warped look and/or puckered stitches.  This will also help to get rid of any sizing the manufacturer applies to your fabric.

I highly recommend line drying your finished backpack.  By line drying your garments, you will increase it's longevity (ten fold) while keeping it new looking.  Personally, I only machine dry play clothes.
